Reach for the Stars!
5, 4, 3, 2, 1…. BLAST OFF! We were over the moon to learn that our February thematic unit was to be set in outer space! We were so fascinated with our January travels, especially the rocket ship mode of transportation that could send us among the stars. With our interest so highly piqued, it was only right we take the investigation further - much further! Watch us as we float and fly as the planets pass by!
First thing’s first, we needed to prepare for our trip. We studied the life of astronauts through literature, crafts, and even dramatic play! Who knew astronauts could write upside down? We had to try it out for ourselves!
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, We’re Going to the Moon!
There were so many questions we had about the moon. Is it a planet? What are those craters? Is it really made out of cheese? We went into lunar mode and studied phases of the moon, moon rocks, and the surface. We tested out the impact of asteroids on the moons surface by dropping them into a model surface. A fizzy science experiment resulted in homemade moon rocks exploding before our eyes into a glittering pile of liquid! We were so thrilled to have learned so much about the Earth’s pet rock!
In other solar system news, our galaxy contains 8 planets! Yes 8, but the ladybugs could not and would not let me exclude Pluto from our lineup. What a lesson in preschool inclusivity! We sang, danced, created, and played in true preschool fashion. Their artistic masterpieces were out of this world!
We ended our journey across the universe with constellations. Constellations shine bright, have imaginative properties, and work together to form something spectacular. We have more in common with constellations than we think!
We practiced constellation patterns, even turning a few into letters! Our Starry Night Art used unlikely and different mediums such as Q-tips and toothbrushes but came out absolutely stellar! Our constellation viewers were made by pushing holes into paper and shining a flashlight through the other side. We were in awe of our constellations that showed up on our bathroom ceiling and walls!
February may be the shortest month of the year, but that doesn’t mean it was packed with any less action! We incorporated celebrations for holidays such as Groundhog’s Day, Chinese Lunar New Year, President’s Day and of course Valentines Day. Everyone was ecstatic about giving and receiving these special sentiments of love through valentine cards. I loved leading this holiday with acts of kindness and pure friendship!
Thanks for reading. See you in March!
