I am delighted to announce we have just concluded our first month of preschool! The ladybugs and I had an awesome time jumping, hopping, and skipping right in with our theme of Community. This is a special topic that really focuses in on your preschooler and all the communities that they belong to, including the new school environment. The purpose behind this topic is to recognize and assert connections with others by looking within ourselves, family life, and the outside world community. Your preschooler is an exceptional member of all of these diverse communities and we want them to know that!
We established our sense of self through emotion and puppet play as well as discussed our biggest support system, family. We also looked to our bigger- picture surroundings to discuss the grand scheme community we belong to here in Brooklyn along with all the helpers who make it so extraordinary. To us, building self esteem and assigning appropriate integration is imperative within the first month in a new and uncharted atmosphere such as the classroom. All in all, it was a fantastic month!
All about me week is a great way to bring us closer through discussion and play. We graphed our emotions and feelings, assessed similarities and differences in our physical attributes as well as our likes and dislikes, and tied in name recognition and the letters that form our names. We had a wonderful time creating meaningful and memorable learning experiences while getting to know one another!
We also finished up a very special week talking about the people who mean the most to us, our family. This sub-unit really helped foster positive learning experiences where the children could share, discuss, and relate to one another in a more personal way. I too enjoyed hearing all about family trips, traditions, and other happenings in the home. Our ladybugs took pride in contributing to our family tree display as well as creating their own version of a family tree by highlighting who lives in the home. Every child had something unique about their family, and we love embracing it all!
You've all done a wonderful job familiarizing our ladybugs with their surroundings- it's been proven from all the thoughtful and intriguing discussions we've had this week!
We spent our circle time generating lists and going over some of the members in our community. This list seemed never ending some days! We were lucky enough to go on a community walk and search for important members of the community. How opportune that we found a friendly firefighter to give us an exterior tour of his firetruck! We also made crafts and sang songs to deepen our understanding of the roles these community helpers play. We’re so happy to incorporate theses community roles in the forms of sensory play, math concepts, art, and more! We had a full house of doctors, firefighters, dentists, construction workers, and anything else you can imagine!
Our 4’s had a cross-cutting science unit with a body study this month! Head, shoulders, knees and bones! That’s right, we uncovered our body systems layer by layer and engaged in hands-on science which made it all the more interesting! We had Mr. Boney, a funny skeleton show us the ways of the body and where our organs belong. We also created our own body books with color coded sections to help us better understand what lies beneath the skin. Check out our blood model and brain surgery! I can’t wait to discuss more about the body and lead engaging experiments with this group!
Thank you all for such an amazing start to our year. October here we come!
