Love is in the air!
Reaching our mid-year mark, our preschoolers have undergone many changes developmentally, cognitively, and personally. Thus we choose the month of February to take time to look back on the cherished friendships we've made and how we can continue to foster them while we experience these necessary transformations together. Through acts of kindness, sharing, meaningful conversation, and interpersonal connections we grow to understand one of the most important preschool (as well as lifelong lessons); what it means to be a good friend!
We started off the month with a lesson that encompasses both social studies and science, the ever-interesting and somewhat silly Groundhog Day! Our friends were quick to repeat the holiday as "Hedgehog Day" due to this new and unusual animal term. The good news is there is no holiday too silly or small that we won't celebrate, so we got right to uncovering the hype! We were immediately engaged with the shadow vs. non-shadow meaning so we took a morning poll and then carried out an investigation ourselves. I loved the hypothesis and explanation behind why or why not they believed a shadow would appear. For the rest of the week the preschoolers were on shadow patrol and making connections inside and out(side)!
February (as we've learned) is the shortest month of the year, so we wasted no time getting right into our story of the month, "Rainbow Fish". The story highlights a fish who swims down a lonely path until he finds joy in sharing with those around him. These sharing experiences create long lasting friendships and Rainbow Fish learns to change his previously sullen ways in turn for happy interactions. Rainbow Fish is delighted to find that although it feels nice to have things, it feels even better to share and offer companionship! We had so much fun portraying all the characters in the story and handing out the shiny scales among our friends. Nothing fishy here, just fond and fabulous friends!
We all have our unique characteristics and stand-out traits, but when we come together our colors are nothing short of a beautiful and breath-taking sequence, like a rainbow! We did some rainbow studies to play off our book character and examine how colors are capable of creating blends, just like how our friendships are cultivated! The colors are outstanding by themselves, but we've come to find the more colors the merrier!
On the topic of friendships, we made a new friend who is always looking out for us, and our teeth! In association with dental health month, we were lucky enough to partner with a local dentist who came to teach us that not only should we be kind to others, but we also must remember to be kind and take care of ourselves! Thus our lesson in teeth brushing, flossing, nutrition, dentist tools, and hygiene commenced! This visit piqued our interest so much that the next day a dental office popped up in our dramatic play area. Thank you for choosing Ladybug Smiles Dental Group, the very best friend your teeth will meet!
Can you spot the real dentists from the make-believers? Didn't think so!
Have you ever asked a preschooler what rules they would enact if they were President? What are you waiting for! We lead a circle time discussion with some vey creative and surprisingly presidential answers. Our President's Day lesson left us eager to be the change we want to see in the world! We walked away from this lesson understanding we have all the potential to lead and make our dreams come true! We also tied in some musical games, coin math, feather writing, and log cabin art in true preschool fashion!
Though only mid-month, we concluded our friend-fest with a celebratory week of Valentine's Day activities. We even had our first meaningful exchange of valentines throughout the room! The preschoolers were ultra excited to carry out this act of kindness and took a page right out of Rainbow Fish's book, it feels great to share the love!
Thanks for coming along for our festive and fun packed February! March is sure to be a green and glorious month!
