Who knew prepping for the cold could be so much fun? With an extra chill in the air we couldn't wait to seek out more wintertime activities and play-based learning. We had a teeny taste of snowfall a couple blog posts ago, but now we are ready for the real thing!
Math manipulatives this week of course didn't stray far from our theme. We used snowflakes and cotton balls to represent numbers on our snowman math mats, but the counting didn't stop there! We also took to the carpet to use some leftover mittens for a measurement activity. Not only did the Ladybugs fully engage by independently measuring their friends, they were also responsible for recording their findings. We assessed these numbers through graphing and making comparisons.
Our tallest friend was 10 mittens tall, and our shortest was about 8!
You can't think snow without sensory. Check out our snowy mixture used to build artificial snowmen and other structures. Hopefully soon enough we will be able to replace this with the real thing...
Early in the week we read a book from one of our favorite series called "Pinkalicious and the Snow Globe". The story was full of snow globe scenes with whirling blizzards and smiling snowmen. The children were so excited to emulate the story and try their hand at making their own snow globes! We discussed all the shapes needed to construct it, and then used the very active and exciting method of marble painting. The rolling marble dragged chaotic and realistic "snow" across the globe, taking our art to a whole new level!
We also spent some time exploring the letter "i" this week. After a search and seek, human letter, and igloo craft, I'd say we are experts. The proof is in the pictures below!
Imagination also starts with "i"! We turned our mini mountain into an icy igloo and built our own baby igloos with some play "ice" blocks! How exciting to walk outside and find this frozen formation. Of course we chilled inside all morning!
We concluded our week with a snowy day favorite, PAJAMAS! We were dressed to impress in penguins, rockets, trucks, superheroes, and some holiday spirit. Of course pajama day isn't complete without the addition of a snuggly stuffed animal. Too much fun for words!
Thanks for such a great winter themed week Ladybugs. Stay warm this weekend and let it snow!
