Orange you pumped that Halloween is right around the corner? We surely got into the spirit this week with lots of pumpkin fun! From alphabet games to compare and contrast diagrams to slime, we spent our days exploring this festive fall fruit.
Circle time is our home base for greeting friends and sharing ideas, stories, and laughs. Here we turn our brain boxes on and have meaningful discussions through means of conceptualizing together. We used our mini pumpkins from our previous Hardware Store journey to inspect, investigate, and report our findings on our new orange subject. Let it be known I am merely a scribe, our preschool friends dictated all that is written on the easel! From there we played a ton of letter recognition games, of course keeping in mind our special letter "P"! We also spent one morning going on a pumpkin hunt through our preschool patch! Our friends get so excited to scramble around the room and then graph their discoveries.
We didn't stop our adventure there. This week we created our very own Pumpkin Journals, complete with information unique to our preschoolers and their selected pumpkins! We used our mathematical skills to carry out measurements with string. We then documented this in the form of inches with a tape measure. It was especially fun accounting for the long or short stem when measuring from top to bottom! Be sure to check the booklet for a very personal touch, the pumpkin's name!
To bring it back to all things "P", we painted paper plates and placed a pretty paper "P" on our pumpkin project. We also added paint to our mini pumpkins!
Friday's are always full of surprises. Farmer Fred kept up with the fruit theme in order to discuss parts of a plant such as roots, stem, flower, leaves, and seeds. He then let us taste some of the healthiest snacks so we could first hand experience parts of the plant! We munched on celery, lettuce, carrots, and broccoli! See if your child can tell you which part of the plant corresponds with which veggie!
This Friday we also brought back a fan favorite, slime- but this time in pumpkin form. We got down and dirty with seeds, pulp, and other pumpkin innards- something the kids have been patiently waiting for! Of course lots of counting, sculpting, molding, and learning ensued. Nothing like slime to cap off our pumpkin week!
With bated breath I am happy to announce that we will be kicking off our spook-tacular Halloween Week! Here at Ladybug we are sure to emphasize the silly and creative over scary and creepy. I am all for witches brew, haunted stories and ghostly activities and as long as we are all on the same safe page I believe we can maximize learning experiences in an awesomely wicked way. We will be having our annual Halloween Parade on Thursday October 27th at 5:00pm beginning at Ladybug Preschool and marching down to Ladybug Daycare on 4th Place. More details to come!
Have a wonderful weekend!
